Grounded is a garden design practice founded by Josh Clarke, based in Norwich and working across Norfolk, Suffolk and London.

Before moving into garden design, Josh spent fifteen years in London working in creative strategy, helping shape ideas from concept through to delivery.

Today, that same approach is applied to gardens: understanding a space, resolving complex decisions, and creating designs that are both practical and enduring.

Josh holds a Distinction in the Postgraduate Diploma in Garden Design from the British Academy of Garden Design and has completed formal RHS horticultural training, combining design thinking with a strong horticultural backbone.

Grounded approaches every project as a whole. Rather than treating layout, materials and planting as separate decisions, they are developed together to create a garden that feels coherent, functions well and can be built with confidence.

Whether it's a complete redesign or a carefully considered improvement to an existing garden, the aim is always the same: to bring clarity to the design process and create outdoor spaces that are a pleasure to live with.

Grounded was set up by Josh Clarke, a garden designer based in Norwich.

Before moving into garden design, Josh worked as a creative strategy director within the world of digital publishing — shaping ideas and seeing them through to delivery. That same approach now applies to gardens: clear thinking, properly executed.

Qualifications include a distinction in the Postgraduate Diploma in Garden Design at the British Academy of Garden Design, alongside formal RHS horticultural training.

Grounded focuses on making gardens work properly. Each project starts with the whole space — not isolated elements — bringing structure, planting and materials into something coherent and buildable.

The aim is simple: a garden that holds together, functions well, and won’t need revisiting later.

How we work

Projects begin with a site visit to understand the space, its users and what is needed from the garden.

From there, we develop a clear layout and design approach, refining it into a scheme that can be built with confidence.

Where needed, Grounded stays involved through the build to make sure the design is carried through to completion.
